After much protest, he puts the hat on. I turn and smile. This small show of force on his part is hand-in-hand with his age, I know, but it still makes me laugh.

For weeks, we've had the same argument before school.

"Put your hat on," I say.

He stands there, giving me the biggest puppy dog eyes I've ever seen.

I try negotiating - a skill I've mastered since becoming a mother. "We'll go to the store and you can pick a new one, okay?"

His answering smile is an exact copy of this father's, and my heart aches.
